Mobile Scaffolds
Mobile scaffolds are widely used for temporary work at height, such as maintenance, painting, and installations. Due to the risk of falling, it is crucial that mobile scaffolds are assembled safely and maintained properly. Periodic inspection and testing are legally required according to the Health and Safety Act and the NEN-EN 1004 standard.
Purpose of the Inspection:
Ensure the structural safety and proper assembly of the mobile scaffold to prevent risks of collapse, falling, or tipping over. The inspection helps to identify damage, wear, or unsafe situations early on.
Types of Inspections:
Visual inspection before use (by assembler/user):
- Ensure all parts are present, undamaged, and correctly assembled.
- Check that the base is flat and stable.
- Ensure that wheels are locked and properly secured.
Periodic inspection (usually annually):
- Performed by a qualified person or certified inspection company.
- Check all parts and connections for damage, wear, or corrosion.
- Optionally, include an on-site assembly check.
Inspection after modification, relocation, or fall incident:
- Re-inspection is required if the structure has been altered or if there is any doubt about the safety.
Inspection Points During the Inspection:
Construction components:
- Frames, rungs, and braces for soundness, dents, or deformations.
- Platforms for deflection, damage, and anti-slip coating.
- Handrails, guardrails, and assembly frames for completeness and proper attachment.
Wheels and stability:
- Check wheels for wear, functioning of the brake, and locking mechanism.
- Ensure stabilizers and scaffold legs are properly attached.
- Verify the correct size of the scaffold (according to the manufacturer’s assembly instructions).
Assembly and use:
- Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines (manual required on-site).
- Ensure no missing or improvised parts.
- Respect the maximum working height and load capacity.
Marking and documentation:
- Serial number or identification code present.
- Inspection label or sticker with the date of the next inspection.
- Registration in the inspection logbook or digital management system.
Inspection Frequency:
- At least once a year, or more frequently with intensive use or heavy working conditions (e.g., construction sites or outdoor work).
- After relocation or long storage periods: re-inspection before use.
