NEN 3140 – Electric Equipment
The inspection and certification of electric power tools are essential for maintaining a safe working environment and preventing electrical shock, fire hazards, or mechanical injuries. Electric tools used in the workplace must meet the safety requirements as outlined in the NEN 3140 standard (“Operation of Electrical Installations – Low Voltage”).
Purpose of the Inspection:
Early detection of defects, wear, or damage that could affect the safety of the tool. This helps reduce workplace risks and prevent downtime due to tool malfunctions.
Types of Inspections:
Visual inspection before use (by user):
- Check for damaged housing, cords, and plugs.
- Ensure the tool is clean and free of dust or moisture.
- Check for obvious mechanical damage or unusual sounds.
Periodic inspection (usually annually or depending on usage environment):
- Conducted by a qualified person (according to NEN 3140).
Electrical measurements such as:
- Insulation resistance
- Ground resistance
- Leakage current measurement
- Check of mechanical safety features (e.g., emergency stop, safety features).
- Functional test of the tool under load.
- Documentation of inspection results (digitally or on inspection sticker).
Key Inspection Points:
- Cords and plugs (for wear, kinks, or breaks).
- Switches and moving parts (for proper operation).
- Housing (for cracks, loose parts, or overheating).
- Protection against dust and moisture (IP rating where applicable).
- Grounding and double insulation (indicated by the symbol on the tool).
- CE marking and nameplate (check for correct use).
Inspection Frequency:
- Typically annually, unless the working environment imposes more stringent requirements (such as construction sites or damp environments).
- For heavy usage or high-risk environments: 1 to 4 times per year.
- After repairs or modifications, a re-inspection is always required.
After the inspection, you will receive a unique certificate for each item, which includes the serial number and the findings of the inspection. This ensures you always comply with the documentation requirements for electric tools.
