Hoisting Belts & Round Slings

Hoisting belts and round slings are flexible lifting tools commonly used for hoisting and moving loads. They offer advantages such as low own mass, no damage to the load, and easy handling. However, due to their material (usually polyester), they are also susceptible to wear, cuts, and chemical damage. Therefore, periodic inspection and certification are legally required for professional use.

Purpose of the Inspection:

  • Prevent lifting accidents due to breakage or tearing of worn or damaged lifting material.
  • Ensure the safety of employees and equipment.
  • Comply with the Health and Safety Act and relevant standards.

Applications:

  • Moving loads in construction, industry, logistics, offshore, and ports.
  • Used both singly and in combination with lifting jigs or hooks.
  • Round slings are often used where loads need to be embraced or on sensitive surfaces.

Types of Inspections:

Visual inspection before every use (by user):

  • Check for cuts, damage, discoloration, tears, or contamination.
  • Check labels and markings (WLL, length, manufacturer).

Periodic inspection (mandatory):

  • At least once a year, or more frequently in cases of heavy use or harsh conditions.
  • Performed by a qualified person or inspection company.

In case of doubt, damage, or incident:

  • The hoisting belt or round sling must be taken out of use immediately for inspection or rejection.

Inspection Points During the Inspection:

Material Condition:

  • Cracks, cuts, burn marks, or fraying of the sling or cover.
  • Damage from chemicals, UV damage, or melting.
  • Expansion, hardening, or deformation of the fibers.

Stitching (for hoisting belts):

  • Check for loose or worn stitches.
  • Damage to protective covers or reinforcements at the ends.

Protective Cover (for round slings):

  • Cracks or holes in the cover: if the inner core is visible, it must be rejected immediately!
  • Discoloration or damage from oil, acids, solvents.

Labels and Markings:

  • The label must be present, legible, and intact.
  • The following must be mentioned:
  • WLL (Working Load Limit) in tons
  • Length in meters
  • Standard (EN 1492-1 or EN 1492-2)
  • Manufacturer and CE marking
  • Production date or serial number

Hardware (if applicable):

  • Hooks, D-rings, and eyelets must be free from wear, rust, or bending.
